One of the nicest word in English Language is “FRIENDSHIP”.
But have you ever paused to consider the true meaning and significance of the word?
The dictionary defines a friend as “a person attached to another person by feelings of affection and personal regards”. If taken in this context, it must be admitted that the word “Friend” is used far too loosely.
A friend is a person we like, who likes us in return. This, mind you, in spite of obvious faults on both sides. We hold him in high esteem, we value his opinions, we are always ready to help him and receive help from him. The relationship is a cordial one and the atmosphere, when friends are together, is easy and comfortable.
In the world of business, the word “Friendship” is the most misused. Harmonious relationship here are calculated things. They are part of public relations job, whenever it is imperative to keep the client’s goodwill, in order to get him to increase his custom. Business acquaintances are just that business acquaintances. To use the word friends is to mock at the truth.
Friendship must have respect at its roots. The requirements of friendship are by no means few. You should not only be affectionate to friend – you should be devoted to him. You should be happy to see him come and little sad when he has to go. You should esteem and admire him. You should cherish his good opinion of you and do all you can to further it.
Of course, it is also possible that you expect entirely too much from a friend. In which case you may be depriving yourself of friends who are, in fact, worth having.
That’s why it is said that “Every man should keep a fair-sized cemetery in which to bury the faults of his friends”.
Remember the words of Shakespeare,
‘THE FRIENDS HOU HAST, AND THEIR ADOPTION TRIED – GRAPPLE THEM TO THY SOUL WITH HOOPS OF SETL’.
